By Dick Barber Strange Bedfellows The preservation of Rancho Guejito has surfaced in news again. This time it was not the Rodney Co., (current owners of the Ranch): but instead it was County Supervisor Bill Horn and Endangered Habitats League Director Dr. Dan Silver who stirred up the pot. They issued a joint statement that they intended to do their best to prevent subdivision or any other encroaching development on the 21000+ acre Ranch. This caused raised eyebrows among long time coservationists. Sup. Horn has never been seen as a supporter of environmental preservation. He has always been a staunch advocate for property rights. Sup. Horn and Dr. Silver are not just blowing hot air. They have arranged late April appointments in Washington to lobby federal officials to save Guejito. While this is not surprising in the case of Dan Silver, would seem to be a real bonus to have Bill Horn on board as well. Actually this is not the first time that Bill Horn has been supportive on an environmental issue. He has also in recent years taken a positive position in preserving habitat along Santa Margarita River and in acquiring a wildlife buffer along a portion of the eastern border of Camp Pendleton. We can use all the help we can get to prevent unwanted development of Guejito, and Sup. Horn may carry some weight in Washington. We wish the Horn-Silver team success in their efforts. Saving Guejito is of gigantic importance!! |
Sunrise Powerlink We seem to be back at square one on the Powerlink issue. After considering numerous suggested routes as alternatives to their preferred route from Imperial County through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and San Pasqual Valley SDG&Ehas reverted to its original preferred route with minor modifications. The opposition to this project continues to build, and no satisfactory solution is in sight Toll Road The rejection by the Coastal Commission of the proposed toll road through San Onofre State Beach has not settled the matter by any means. Governor Schawzenegger has assailed the decision and expressed his support for the construction of the toll road
