50 eyes scoured the hillsides, fields, mystic trail and lakeside for our feathered friends this morning. The count seemed scan as we sallied forth. We blamed global warming, lack of rain, lack of bugs, lack of patience. However, come our morning’s tally, the bell rang at 45 species, just three shy of last year’s count, at about the same time of year. Gone were the three Tern species who last year must have had much better fishing. Meanwhile a Clark’s Grebe put in an appearance for the first time. John Sanderson sighted in an Ash-throated Flycatcher, another new bird here in recent times.Although rare in lots of parts of California, the Bell’s Vireo were very prolific and vocal. Great looks were afforded to several of our doddling members. Although other Audubon clubs may show disdain for idle chitchat, not so with our group as there was constant din. One would perhaps think the outing was a reunion of some sort with everyone catching up on the trials, tribulations and travels of others.
