Whelan Lake Bird Count March 24, 2018

It was a fine Spring day for our Whelan Lake outing: cool in the morning especially with the breeze, but warmed up nicely as we progressed. We had an excellent turnout with 28 birders. Perhaps the coffee, juice, doughnuts and fruit waiting for everyone upon their arrival got a few more out than usual. Because of the large group we divided up: one group led by Richard Fowler went all the way around the lake. They found this not as productive, yet at the same time did yield several species not found by others. Because this trip is billed as a “1”, those that chose not to go down into the reclamation ponds, followed Diane to the far end of Whelan Lake instead. At the reclamation ponds the others were met by a county official. Oh oh! As it turned out “Don” was a delightful individual who took his lunch break a little early to follow us on the balance of our walk. He was ecstatic when we discovered the ten-inch long bushtit nest which he described as being constructed by aliens, and so it did seem. Our final count of 69 was very acceptable!

Until next time, Flyin’ high
