DESCRIPTION:GPS: 33°04’51.3″N 117°04’52.9″W\nRating: Easy to Moderate (concrete and dirt paths around the county park)\nBathrooms: several available around the park \nDirections: From I-15 in Escondido\, drive a short distance west on Via Rancho Parkway to Felicita Rd. (stoplight) and turn right. Heading north a short distance on Felicita Rd.\, turn right again\, on Clarence Lane (stop sign)\, and head up the hill two blocks\, and turn left on Cita Avenue (33°04’51.3″N 117°04’52.9″W). Park along Cita Ave. Since the Felicita County Park main parking lot doesn’t open until 9:30 am\, we will park along Cita Ave\, and as a group\, we will walk into the Park as pedestrians. From I-5 north\, exit east on Hwy 76 and continue to the Douglas Drive exit. Take Douglas Drive north approximately 1 mile and turn left on North River Road. Continue west on North River Rd. to the entrance gate at the end. \nNOTE: The caretaker has offered to have the gate open at 7:30 am for Early Birds and leave it open until 8:45 to accommodate latecomers. \nFrom the gate\, proceed straight ahead on the less-traveled road to the Sanctuary. Disregard the “No Trespassing” Signs. \nFor those interested in lunch\, we will be dining at “The Pitstop”\, located beside the police station\, at 3825 Mission Avenue\, Oceanside 92058\, just a couple of blocks west of Douglas Drive. Take Hwy 79 south approximately 8 miles. \nThe mine itself is off a small state park road that is well-signed in both directions and to the east of Hwy 79. Turn right on Pine Hill Road and drive south for 2 miles to Frisius Road. Turn left (east) onto Frisius Road\, and drive another 2 miles to the park entrance. We will meet in the parking lot. \nWilliam Heise County Park has public parking\, but there is a $5 parking fee (free with a senior County pass). \nWe will also drive to Santa Ysabel Mission to look for orioles and other spring/summer migrants. \nBring a lunch for an after-birding picnic at the mission. \nExpect warm weather.

Driving east on I-8\, and after Pine Valley\, look for signs indicating the Sunrise Highway Exit and Laguna Mountain Recreation Area.  Go north on Sunrise Hwy. (S-1) approx. 5.3 miles to the Mile 19 Marker and Meadows Information Kiosk. There is street parking along Sunrise Highway\, but an Adventure Pass is required and must be purchased ahead of time. However\, there is free parking .2 miles before the pullout along Sunrise Highway. \nThe Forest Service Adventure Pass ($5) is available locally in San Diego County at major sporting goods stores and at other areas in the Lagunas. A National Park Pass is valid as well. \nExpect warm weather.

This is one of the only places in San Diego County to see the Gray Vireo. We will then continue north about 2 miles to the Cibbets Flat Campground. And perhaps\, spend the weekend there.\nDirections to Big Morongo: (for GPS Users\, the address is 11055 East Dr\, Morongo Valley\, CA 92256)  From Escondido\, proceed north on I-15 approx. 36 miles to the I-15/I-215 split in Murrieta. Change to I-215 north and continue about 30 miles to Hwy 60 east. Take Hwy 60 east approx.18 miles and merge with the I-10. Then continuing east on I-10 approximately 40 miles to Hwy 62. Go north on Hwy 62 about 12 miles to Morongo Valley (a small town). About a mile or two into town\, look for signs for Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Turn right (south) on East Drive\, a dirt road\, to the Preserve. The parking lot is just beyond the caretaker’s house. Allow 2+ hours travel time from Escondido. There is an option to stay at the Nature Center and skip the hike.  There are nice places to sit and watch birds from the Nature Center.\nThe Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve\, located at the southern end of the Santa Ana Mountains in southwest Riverside County near the city of Murrieta\, is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and ecosystems of the area. Consisting of 9\,000 acres\, the Reserve protects unique ecosystems such as Engelmann oak woodlands\, riparian wetlands\, coastal sage scrub\, chaparral\, bunchgrass prairie\, and vernal pools as well as more than 200 species of native birds and 49 endangered\, threatened or rare animal and plant species\, including mule deer\, mountain lions\, badgers\, bobcats\, western pond turtles\, white-tailed kites and fairy shrimp. Of the two species of fairy shrimp that live in the seasonal vernal pools on the Reserve\, one is found only here and nowhere else on Earth! (Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve | Rivcoparks)  The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in California charges day-use fees of $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 2–12.\nDirections:\nAllow 45 minutes from Escondido. DESCRIPTION:We will meet near the bathrooms in the park in the center of the large Palm Canyon Drive roundabout of Borrego Springs. It is called Christmas Circle Community Park (700 Christmas Circle Dr.\, Borrego Springs\, CA 92004). We are meeting at 8 am\, so allow at least an hour and a half from Escondido. From there\, we will go to the Borrego Springs hawkwatch location. \nGPS: 33.25607651510925\, -116.37497932795526\nDirections:\n\nStart in Escondido. Get onto CA-78 East (follow signs for CA-78 / Ramona / Julian). Stay on CA-78 E for the majority of the first part of the trip. You will be on 78 E for approx. 37 miles\nIn Santa Ysabel\, turn left onto CA-79 North (signed for Julian / Warner Springs). Stay on CA-79 for about 11 miles.\nWhen you reach the junction with County Road S-2 (San Felipe Road)\, turn right onto S-2 / San Felipe Road and follow it for about 4 miles.\nLook for County Road S-22 / Montezuma Valley Road (often signed as Montezuma Valley Rd) and turn left onto S-22. This climbs Montezuma Grade and then descends into the Borrego Valley (spectacular views; winding section). This segment is approx. 13 miles\nContinue on S-22 as it leads you into Borrego Springs; S-22 turns into Borrego Springs Road as you come into town. Follow Borrego Springs Road toward the town center.\nArrive at Christmas Circle. The roundabout/park (Christmas Circle Community Park) is the green\, circular park in the center of town (700 Christmas Circle Dr\, Borrego Springs\, CA 92004). Continue north on the I-405 a short distance and then take the Culver exit and turn left (south). At the first signal\, which is Michelson\, turn right. Continue west on Michelson and then turn left on Harvard. Continue south on Harvard and then turn right on University Dr. Continue on University to Campus Dr. and turn right again. Stay in the far right lane and immediately turn right onto Riparian View\, which will enter the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. (There is a dark green sign by the turnoff\, identifying this as the route into the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary) At the end of the road\, you will make a sharp left turn down a steep driveway and into the parking lot. The first building you see will be the Sea & Sage Audubon House. Beyond the Audubon House are the ponds of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and many trails for us to explore.
