Continue north on the I-405 a short distance and then take the Culver exit and turn left (south). At the first signal\, which is Michelson\, turn right. Continue west on Michelson and then turn left on Harvard. Continue south on Harvard and then turn right on University Dr. Continue on University to Campus Dr. and turn right again. Stay in the far right lane and immediately turn right onto Riparian View\, which will enter the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. (There is a dark green sign by the turnoff\, identifying this as the route into the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary) At the end of the road\, you will make a sharp left turn down a steep driveway and into the parking lot. The first building you see will be the Sea & Sage Audubon House. Beyond the Audubon House are the ponds of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and many trails for us to explore. Continue north on the I-215.  Exit at the Ramona Expressway right (east).  Continue east to Lakeview (a small town). DESCRIPTION:This Trip is currently full. \nContact DSWALKLEY@aol.com about being added to the waitlist.\n \nEveryone who attended our Morro Bay adventure two years ago will agree that it was an exciting and fun-filled excursion to see the many unique birds and other wildlife along the coastline of this beautiful part of our state! \nThe guide for this trip will be Gjon Hazard\, accompanied by his wife\, Barbara. Participants are in for a real treat\, with Gjon as our guide! He will thoroughly research the hotspots and take us to the exact locations for the best viewing of our target birds. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! \nOnce again\, we will stay three nights at the Ascot Suites\, which has a room for gathering prior to dinner for our happy hour\, and also for the complimentary breakfast. Doug Walkley is the organizer for this trip\, and he has set aside a block of rooms here\, at a group rate. Currently\, the group rate for a king-sized room is $137. Once confirmed for the trip\, participants will be responsible for booking their own rooms. \nWe will meet each night for dinner as a group\, with each of us responsible for our own meals and beverages. The restaurants and addresses will be available at a later date. \nThis trip is open only to PAS members. The cost per person is $160. The count circle incorporates mostly rural areas near Escondido\, Valley Center\, Ramona\, and Poway. Fantastic birding skills are not a requirement – an extra pair of eyes is always helpful. The after-birding compilation meeting will be held in the early afternoon at Kit Carson Park’s Tree Lake 1 Pavilion\, which is a covered picnic shelter (33.073277356458235\, -117.06333385796887). Bald Eagles and Ospreys might be seen\, among the resident birds along with fall and early winter visitors\nDirections:\nTo get to Lake Wohlford from Escondido\, travel east on Valley Parkway. At Washington Avenue\, Valley Parkway becomes Valley Center Road. Continue another 0.8 mile to Lake Wohlford Road and turn right. Drive 1.9 miles uphill to Oakvale Road\, and it’s again on the right. DESCRIPTION:GPS: 33.695584\,-118.046917\nRating:  Easy to Moderate (Flat dirt & paved walkways\, grass)\nBolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is the largest coastal salt marsh preserve in the Los Angeles/Orange County metropolitan region. Its 300 acres are a vital oasis for resident shorebirds and millions of migrating birds traveling between the Arctic and South America along the Pacific Flyway. At Huntington Central Park\, we will see locals and possibly vagrant migrants.\nWe will bird at the Reserve first and then drive to Huntington Central Park.\nBring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the Park picnic tables.\nDirections: Take I-5 north past San Juan Capistrano. Continue on I-5 to I-405. Take I-405 north (towards Long Beach). Exit on Warner Ave. West. Continue west approximately 6 miles to Pacific Coast Hwy. Turn left (south) and drive about 1 mile (making a U-turn) to the Reserve parking lot on the east side of Pacific Coast Hwy. It’s about 70 miles from Oceanside and should take about 75 minutes. Meet at the boardwalk entrance.\nPLAN ON ARRIVING EARLY. DESCRIPTION:Oaxaca\, Mexico\, is a biodiversity hotspot with a wide variety of ecosystems and a large number of endemic bird species. In three days of birding\, Dottie Marron saw 103 bird species in three completely different ecosystems.  This presentation will take you to tropical broad-leaf forest\, dry jungle\, and cloud forest habitats to see the unique birds in each area\, many of them endemic to one specific area of Mexico. Dottie will also share her tips about traveling in Oaxaca and the ease of getting around to experience the beauty and culture of southern Mexico. \nDottie Marron is a long-time member of the Palomar Audubon Society.

DESCRIPTION:Directions: From North County\, take I-15 south to CA-52 east. Take exit 13 (Mast Blvd.) and turn left on to Mast. Take the first right onto West Hills Pkwy. Take another right onto Mission Gorge Rd. and then make a very slight right onto Father Junipero Serra Trail. At the 4-way stop-sign\, make a right onto Bushy Hill Dr.\, and turn right just past the campground entry kiosk into the free Day Use parking area. Expect warm weather.

DESCRIPTION:My Summer Birding Camp at Hog Island\, near Portland\, Maine\nBy Justin Hartsell\nJustin is 15 years old and lives in Fallbrook. He is home-schooled\, and he just completed his freshman year of high school. He started birding at age 8 when he lived in Chicago. He became interested in birding through a Boys Club-sponsored birding contest that was held during the Spring migration season. This is when he found his “Spark Bird”\, the beautiful Blackburnian Warbler. Right now\, Justin’s favorite bird is the Atlantic Puffin.\nIn addition to Justin’s talk\, the winners of the PAS Photo Contest will be announced and discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Directions: Travel south on I-5 from San Diego and exit west on Coronado Avenue\, which becomes Imperial Beach Blvd. Continue west and turn left on 3rd Street to Caspian Way\, turn left again and then turn right into the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center parking lot. DESCRIPTION:This is an unofficial birding event to Old Survey Road on August 31st. Arrive at 7:50 AM so we can gather and be ready to enter at 8 AM when it opens. See permit requirements below!\n33°03’03.5″N 116°56’10.4″W\nThis is a trail that begins at the end of Rangeland Rd. and goes across the north end of Ramona Grasslands.  It’s only open on weekends between August and November\, then closed the rest of the year for golden eagle nesting.  It’s straight in and back out\, and if you make it to the end\, there’s a great view of Pauma Valley.\nIf you plan to go\, you must watch a video\, answer a few questions\, and then download a pass to show the ranger at the gate.  Here is the website:\nhttps://www.sdparks.org/content/sdparks/en/AboutUs/RamonaGrasslandsPermit.html

SUMMARY:San Diego River Estuary & Famosa Slough Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:GPS: 32.761457\,-117.214338\nRating:  Easy (Flat paved walkways)\n\n\nWe will be looking for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds in the channel and bay areas and then drive to Famosa Slough. Please bring a spotting scope if you have one.\nDirections:\nTake I-15 south to I-8. Go west on I-8 and exit north on I-5. Take the first off-ramp\, Sea World Drive west to South Shores Park Drive (stop light). Turn left and proceed to our meeting place along the frontage road adjacent to the Flood Control Channel.\nOur second stop is Famosa Slough at the 4200 block of W Point Loma Blvd\, past the intersection with Famosa Blvd.  Turn left onto Sea World Dr and keep left onto the bridge across the channel.  Once you cross the bridge\, keep left onto Nimitz Blvd and left onto W Point Loma Blvd.  Park on the street and meet on the trail on the south side of W Point Loma Blvd.

Continue about 1 mile on Golfcrest Drive to the Mission Trails Regional Park entrance on the left. Meet in the parking lot near the softball field bleachers. This location is on the northwest end of Lake Murray.\nRestrooms near the parking lot.\nExpect warm weather.
