DESCRIPTION:Oaxaca\, Mexico\, is a biodiversity hotspot with a wide variety of ecosystems and a large number of endemic bird species. In three days of birding\, Dottie Marron saw 103 bird species in three completely different ecosystems.  This presentation will take you to tropical broad-leaf forest\, dry jungle\, and cloud forest habitats to see the unique birds in each area\, many of them endemic to one specific area of Mexico. Dottie will also share her tips about traveling in Oaxaca and the ease of getting around to experience the beauty and culture of southern Mexico. \nDottie Marron is a long-time member of the Palomar Audubon Society.

We will also drive a short distance to the TJRV Park Headquarters (public restroom and bird feeders) and then visit the nearby Bird & Butterfly Gardens\, where we might see the elusive Black-throated Magpie Jay.\nNo restrooms at Dairy Mart Pond\, and the one at Bird & Butterfly is usually closed.\n

DESCRIPTION:GPS: 33.695584\,-118.046917\nRating:  Easy to Moderate (Flat dirt & paved walkways\, grass)\nBolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is the largest coastal salt marsh preserve in the Los Angeles/Orange County metropolitan region. Its 300 acres are a vital oasis for resident shorebirds and millions of migrating birds traveling between the Arctic and South America along the Pacific Flyway. At Huntington Central Park\, we will see locals and possibly vagrant migrants.\nWe will bird at the Reserve first and then drive to Huntington Central Park.\nBring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the Park picnic tables.\nDirections: Take I-5 north past San Juan Capistrano. Continue on I-5 to I-405. Take I-405 north (towards Long Beach). Exit on Warner Ave. West. Continue west approximately 6 miles to Pacific Coast Hwy. Turn left (south) and drive about 1 mile (making a U-turn) to the Reserve parking lot on the east side of Pacific Coast Hwy. It’s about 70 miles from Oceanside and should take about 75 minutes. Meet at the boardwalk entrance.\nPLAN ON ARRIVING EARLY. At Washington Avenue\, Valley Parkway becomes Valley Center Road. Continue another 0.8 mile to Lake Wohlford Road and turn right. Drive 1.9 miles uphill to Oakvale Road\, and it’s again on the right. The count circle incorporates mostly rural areas near Escondido\, Valley Center\, Ramona\, and Poway. Fantastic birding skills are not a requirement – an extra pair of eyes is always helpful. The after-birding compilation meeting will be held in the early afternoon at Kit Carson Park’s Tree Lake 1 Pavilion\, which is a covered picnic shelter (33.073277356458235\, -117.06333385796887). DESCRIPTION:This Trip is currently full. \nContact DSWALKLEY@aol.com about being added to the waitlist.\n \nEveryone who attended our Morro Bay adventure two years ago will agree that it was an exciting and fun-filled excursion to see the many unique birds and other wildlife along the coastline of this beautiful part of our state! \nThe guide for this trip will be Gjon Hazard\, accompanied by his wife\, Barbara. Participants are in for a real treat\, with Gjon as our guide! He will thoroughly research the hotspots and take us to the exact locations for the best viewing of our target birds. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! \nOnce again\, we will stay three nights at the Ascot Suites\, which has a room for gathering prior to dinner for our happy hour\, and also for the complimentary breakfast. Doug Walkley is the organizer for this trip\, and he has set aside a block of rooms here\, at a group rate. Currently\, the group rate for a king-sized room is $137. Once confirmed for the trip\, participants will be responsible for booking their own rooms. \nWe will meet each night for dinner as a group\, with each of us responsible for our own meals and beverages. The restaurants and addresses will be available at a later date. \nThis trip is open only to PAS members. The cost per person is $160. From I-5 north exit east on Hwy 76 and continue to the Douglas Drive exit. Take Douglas Drive north approximately 1 mile and turn left on North River Road. Continue west on North River Rd. to the entrance gate at the end.\nNOTE: The caretaker has again offered to have the gate open at 7:30 am for Early Birds and leave it open until 8:45 to accommodate latecomers.\nFrom the gate proceed straight ahead on the less traveled road to the Sanctuary. Disregard the “No Trespassing” Signs.\nFor those interested in lunch\, we will be dining at “The Pitstop”\, located beside the police station\, at 3825 Mission Avenue\, Oceanside 92058\, just a couple of blocks west of Douglas Drive. DESCRIPTION:GPS: 33° 39.625′\, -117° 50.471\n Rating: Easy (Flat dirt trails)\nDirections:\nTake I-5 north to the San Diego Freeway I-405. Continue north on the I-405 a short distance and then take the Culver exit and turn left (south). At the first signal\, which is Michelson\, turn right. Continue west on Michelson and then turn left on Harvard. Continue south on Harvard and then turn right on University Dr. Continue on University to Campus Dr. and turn right again. Stay in the far right lane and immediately turn right onto Riparian View\, which will enter the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. (There is a dark green sign by the turnoff\, identifying this as the route into the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary) At the end of the road\, you will make a sharp left turn down a steep driveway and into the parking lot. The first building you see will be the Sea & Sage Audubon House. Beyond the Audubon House are the ponds of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and many trails for us to explore. DESCRIPTION:We will meet near the bathrooms in the park in the center of the large Palm Canyon Drive roundabout of Borrego Springs. It is called Christmas Circle Community Park (700 Christmas Circle Dr.\, Borrego Springs\, CA 92004). We are meeting at 8 am\, so allow at least an hour and a half from Escondido. From there\, we will go to the Borrego Springs hawkwatch location. \nGPS: 33.25607651510925\, -116.37497932795526\nDirections:\n\nStart in Escondido. Get onto CA-78 East (follow signs for CA-78 / Ramona / Julian). Stay on CA-78 E for the majority of the first part of the trip. You will be on 78 E for approx. 37 miles\nIn Santa Ysabel\, turn left onto CA-79 North (signed for Julian / Warner Springs). Stay on CA-79 for about 11 miles.\nWhen you reach the junction with County Road S-2 (San Felipe Road)\, turn right onto S-2 / San Felipe Road and follow it for about 4 miles.\nLook for County Road S-22 / Montezuma Valley Road (often signed as Montezuma Valley Rd) and turn left onto S-22. This climbs Montezuma Grade and then descends into the Borrego Valley (spectacular views; winding section). This segment is approx. 13 miles\nContinue on S-22 as it leads you into Borrego Springs; S-22 turns into Borrego Springs Road as you come into town. Follow Borrego Springs Road toward the town center.\nArrive at Christmas Circle. The roundabout/park (Christmas Circle Community Park) is the green\, circular park in the center of town (700 Christmas Circle Dr\, Borrego Springs\, CA 92004). Park along the circle or use nearby streets; the grassy park and gazebo are unmistakable.

SUMMARY:Sharyl Massy (Sky Hunters – Raptor Education and Rehabilitation) “Remarkable Raptors”
DESCRIPTION:Sky Hunters is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating local communities about the diversity of raptors native to San Diego County\, in addition to caring for sick\, injured\, and orphaned raptors.\nMEET LIVE RAPTORS\, and learn about their diversity\, taxonomy\, and their amazing adaptations! We’ll also discuss what’s involved in raptor rehabilitation and our goal of releasing rehabilitated birds back into their habitats.\nWildlife Conservation and Environmental Education have been Sharyl’s passion for over 35 years. She graduated with a BS in Wildlife Management from Humboldt State University and a MA in Environmental Science Education from Sonoma State University. She has had a diverse career working as a naturalist\, with outdoor education schools on Palomar Mountain and in the Cuyamacas\, as an Interpreter with CA State Parks\, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic\, and worked for The Nature Conservancy as the Education Coordinator on a 100\,000-acre Bison ranch in Colorado. Over the years\, she has volunteered for various conservation organizations\, most recently having served on the Board of Directors with the Volcan Mountain Foundation in Julian. She recently retired and continues to volunteer with Sky Hunters\, spending time working on habitat restoration and native plant gardening projects.\nBring The Kids! SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve Field Trip

There is an option to stay at the Nature Center and skip the hike.  There are nice places to sit and watch birds from the Nature Center.\nThe Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve\, located at the southern end of the Santa Ana Mountains in southwest Riverside County near the city of Murrieta\, is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and ecosystems of the area. Consisting of 9\,000 acres\, the Reserve protects unique ecosystems such as Engelmann oak woodlands\, riparian wetlands\, coastal sage scrub\, chaparral\, bunchgrass prairie\, and vernal pools as well as more than 200 species of native birds and 49 endangered\, threatened or rare animal and plant species\, including mule deer\, mountain lions\, badgers\, bobcats\, western pond turtles\, white-tailed kites and fairy shrimp. Of the two species of fairy shrimp that live in the seasonal vernal pools on the Reserve\, one is found only here and nowhere else on Earth! (Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve | Rivcoparks)  The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in California charges day-use fees of $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 2–12.\nDirections:\nAllow 45 minutes from Escondido. Travel north on I-15 through Temecula to Clinton Keith Rd. Exit Clinton Keith to the right\, then turn left and travel west on Clinton Keith for about 4 miles to the Reserve Visitor Center on your left.  We will meet here and bird briefly around the center\, then carpool to the vernal pools\, and walk to the historic adobe Ranch House.\nPhotos: Santa Rosa Plateau
