SUMMARY:San Diego: An Environmental History with Phil Unitt
DESCRIPTION:San Diego County is renowned for its great biodiversity\, and correspondingly high number of threatened species. Understanding how to conserve what remains means understanding not only how we’ve lost what we’ve lost but how we’ve gained what we’ve gained\, how evolution is keeping pace with urbanization. So in this presentation\, the recently retired Natural History Museum’s curator of birds and mammals\, Philip Unitt (a San Diego treasure himself)\, will address the environmental history of San Diego\, integrating how human history is interlocked with the biological. Even lifelong residents of San Diego are sure to find some surprises in this unique perspective.\nRefreshments will be served starting at 6:30\nand the program begins at 7.

SUMMARY:Big Morongo Canyon Preserve Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:(GPS:  34.050398\, -116.570646)\n\nRating: Easy (Flat boardwalk)\n(NOTE: Later Start Time due to travel distance)\nNOTE:  Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is always a spring hotspot and a favorite PAS field trip.  Several hummingbird and seed feeders attract many bird species for your enjoyment. Birds often found here are Western and Summer Tanagers\, Vermilion Flycatchers\, Yellow-breasted Chat\, and several other more uncommon species. Picnic tables and restrooms are available. Bring a lunch for an after-birding picnic at the bird feeders.\nSince this field trip is quite a long distance from San Diego County\, you may want to drive up there earlier on Friday\, April 21. And perhaps\, spend the weekend there.\nDirections to Big Morongo: (for GPS Users\, the address is 11055 East Dr\, Morongo Valley\, CA 92256)  From Escondido\, proceed north on I-15 approx. 36 miles to the I-15/I-215 split in Murrieta. Change to I-215 north and continue about 30 miles to Hwy 60 east. Take Hwy 60 east approx.18 miles and merge with the I-10. Then continuing east on I-10 approximately 40 miles to Hwy 62. Go north on Hwy 62 about 12 miles to Morongo Valley (a small town). About a mile or two into town\, look for signs for Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Turn right (south) on East Drive\, a dirt road\, to the Preserve. The parking lot is just beyond the caretaker’s house. Allow 2+ hours travel time from Escondido. Bring a lunch for an after-birding picnic at the bird feeders.\nAllow 2 hours travel time from Escondido.

SUMMARY:Birding Adventure: Eastern Sierra/Owens Valley
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Sierra/Owens Valley: May 1-5\, 2026\n\nFor this birding trip\, we will travel along the slopes of the Eastern Sierra\, stopping at various places to look for birds and enjoy the views of the mountains. The main event will be the Sage Grouse mating ritual at their Lek near Crowley Lake. \n\nMay 1st is a travel day to Lone Pine. \nMay 2nd\, we will travel north to Bishop\, birding along the way. Important stops will be at Glacier Lodge for Sooty Grouse and Aspendell for gray-crowned rosy finch and other high altitude specialties. We will stay in Bishop for 2 nights. \nMay 3rd will find us at the Lake Crowley grouse lek at 5:30 AM\, which means leaving Bishop no later than 4:45 AM. We will spend ample time at the lek\, then bird in a long loop for the rest of the day\, stopping along the way for a picnic lunch\, and finally arriving back at Bishop in the afternoon. \nMay 4th\, we will bird our way back to Lone Pine with several stops planned. Spend the night of the 4th in Lone Pine or forge on home if you have the energy. \nMay 5th\, drive up to Whitney Portal\, then drive home. \n\nLeaders: Steve Ellis and Hal Benham\nThe trip will be limited to 20 participants. SUMMARY:La Jolla Coastline Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:From I-5 take the La Jolla Parkway exit west. Continue on this road\, which will merge with Torrey Pines Rd at about ¾ mile\, then turn right on Prospect. Continue on Prospect to Coast Blvd.  Meet on the ocean-side in front of the Bridge Club and restrooms. Parking is all along Coast Blvd and adjacent residential streets. Arrive extra early for the best parking spots. Park at the first available parking space located. Don’t pass up an available parking spot!  We will be looking for shorebirds\, gulls\, and seabirds.

SUMMARY:Birding Adventure: Maine
DESCRIPTION:This Trip is currently full. \nContact PalomarAudubon@gmail.com about being added to the waitlist.\n \nHello Adventure Lovers! Are you ready for another exciting birding adventure sponsored by PAS? How about a trip to the exact opposite corner of the United States\, Acadia National Park\, Maine? This trip is planned for July 18-23\, 2026; prime nesting season for the Atlantic Puffin. We will stay in cabins in the national park\, and eat our meals in the dining hall there. Our tour leader will be Seth Benz\, an accomplished birder who has amassed over 30 years of experience. He is the director of the Schoodic Institute Bird Ecology Program at Acadia National Park. As part of our tour\, we will take a pelagic trip to the stunning Petit Manan Island to view the nesting Atlantic Puffins\, our target bird! I will attach the tentative 6-day itinerary. The cabins where we will stay have two private bedrooms with a shared bathroom\, living room\, and kitchen. Although they are called cabins\, they are more like a small apartment. I will attach a link to the lodging so you will be able to view the cabins. (Go to “Cabins” and click to see the floor plan.) I was told that they will place us with 2 people in each cabin. There is no option for a single supplement\, but your sleeping space will be private. The dining hall where we will have our meals will be either cafeteria style or buffet style\, with options for everyone. Our lunch meals will be picnics packed for us at the institute\, and taken along to eat during the day when we are out birding. There will be opportunities for you to make choices. We will be dining on lobster for our final dinner\, or something equally delicious for the non-lobster lovers. The cost for this all-inclusive trip will be $1\,989 per person. There will be a 30% deposit of $567 due at the time of booking\, and the balance of $1\,422 due 60 days before the date of the trip. The trip includes all meals\, lodging\, guides\, transportation (including airport pick up and drop off)\, and the Acadia Puffin Cruise. Not included are alcoholic drinks\, personal items\, tips to guides and boat captain\, and airfare to and from Maine. Now for the bad news: this trip is limited to only 10 participants. This is necessary due to the limited number of cabins and the limited number of vehicles for transportation. We will hold a lottery for the 10 positions. If you are traveling with another person\, both names will go in the lottery on the same ticket. That way it is either both of you or neither of you when the names are drawn. There will be a wait list; if you don’t make the top 10\, and because the trip is so far away\, there is a good chance that people on the wait list will have the opportunity to move up. There is also a possibility that the institute will be able to offer us a second trip\, back-to-back with the first one\, if we have more than double the interest. Trip #2 would have the exact same itinerary as Trip #1. So please\, if you are interested in this trip\, don’t be shy about signing up! The lottery will be held on October 22nd. We are allowing 2 1/2 weeks for everyone to have a chance to hear about this offering and to decide if you are interested. On October 22nd\, we will let everyone know their position\, following the drawing. (We hope to know at that time if we will be able to book a second trip following the first.) The top 10 people will then need to submit their deposit\, which will hold our spot/dates for this tour. The Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park is booking and charging PAS for a group of 10\, which means that your payment will be made to Palomar Audubon\, and Palomar Audubon will make one payment for the whole group. For this reason\, the deposit will be non-refundable unless there is someone on the wait list to take your place. It is highly likely that there will be someone on the wait list to move into your slot in the event that your plans change and you are unable to go\, but this is information that you need to consider before putting your name in the lottery.
