Spring Birding Trip to Kern River Valley

Birding the Kern River Valley

April 25 – 26, 2015

PAS is pleased to announce an exciting, fast paced weekend of birding the Kern River Valley area, on April 25th and 26th, during the spring migration.  Our guide, Bob Barnes, has guided our trips in the past, and is well known and respected as one of the best birders and birding guides in Kern County.

The trip is limited to 11 participants, because Bob believes that the number of birds we see, and the quality of the birding experience, will deteriorate with a larger group.  During the guided birding trip, we will carpool in three cars with four birders per car, including our guide.

Here is some information about our trip:

We will spend all three nights in Ridgecrest, CA.  We will drive up in our own vehicles (or carpool) on Friday, April 24th, and have dinner in Ridgecrest on Friday evening with Bob Barnes.  He will go over the birding plans for the weekend and let us know what to expect.

We will begin our birding trip in the Mojave Desert Loop on Saturday, and do Butterbredt Springs that day, too.  Sunday will be Kern River Valley in the a.m. and mountains in the p.m.  Bob said the exact times and places are tentative, because so much depends on the activity and what we are finding.

Bob will make hotel recommendations, and let us know which ones provide an early “birders” breakfast.  We will try to all stay in the same place, if possible.  People will be responsible for making reservations and paying for their own rooms.  We will want to stay Friday, Saturday, and possibly Sunday nights.  Meals, snacks and water will also be each participant’s responsibility.

Bob’s fee is $125/day (for the group) plus his gas and meals. As in our past PAS trips, we will also include a $10/person/day tip.  The cost for each participant will be $65.  This includes guide fees x 2 days, meals and gas for guide x 2 days, tip for guide x 2 days.  Any remaining funds will go to Palomar Audubon Society.

Because we expect this trip to “sell out”, we have specific sign-up regulations in order to provide equal opportunity and a fair chance for all.  We will announce and advertise the trip during the month of January.  On February 2nd, 2015 we will begin the registration process, on a first come – first served basis.  Checks and envelopes must be dated and postmarked no sooner than February 2ndIn order to guarantee your best chance for a spot on the trip, mail your check and registration form on Monday, February 2nd to trip organizers:

Dianne & Hal Benham
15946 Cumberland Drive
Poway, CA 92064

If more envelopes arrive than there are spaces available, there will be a drawing of names in order to keep it fair for all.  There will be a waiting list formed if there are more sign-ups than space allows.

To register for this trip you must be a member of Palomar Audubon Society.  If you are not currently a PAS member, you may join now by contacting membership through our website.
