PAS Bird Walk at Whelan Lake

Palomar Audubon had a very large group of 42 bird enthusiasts make it out to Whelan Lake this morning. It started out hazy and 67° and gradually headed up to 81°. The lake is short on ducks except for the resident Mallards, Wood Ducks, and Ruddy ducks, but there were lots of herons. We also had plenty of Least Bell’s Vireos and we were able to spot a few as well as Hutton’s Vireos and got a few looks at Swinhoe’s White Eyes. Check out the eBird list for the rest of the birds seen. We did not, however, find the Loggerhead Shrike that was seen on Friday.  https://ebird.org/checklist/S192624257  Many thanks to our leader Denise Riddle.

Doug & Diane Walkley treated us to homemade banana bread, donuts, and cold drinks after the walk; it was a pleasure to see them and a welcome surprise after a hot walk.  A small group went on to lunch at the Pit Stop Diner, as is tradition, where we shared lots of good birding stories.
