24 Jun 2023 – Palomar Mountain SP Trip Report

Hi, Birders,

It was a wonderful day on Palomar Mountain, sunny, cool, not too buggy and very green. A group of 22 circled Doane Pond and then took the Nature Trail counter clockwise for the first time. We managed two creek crossings with a little help and nobody fell. Two stayed at the pond and did armchair birding, the future for some of us. We ended the morning at Silvercrest Picnic Area for a shady lunch after which an enthusiastic group decided to return to the pond and meadow to search for more birds.

Highlights included many views of the Purple Martins and Violet-green Swallows over the pond and meadow, an up-close encounter of a Wood Creeper, and a female turkey with two chicks in tow. It was a quiet birding day, not that many species seen, more heard.

Below is the link to the ebird report.

Happy birding,

Sally Sanderson
