Guajome Birding on February 3

Well Folks, it was a record count day at Guajome! We came home with 60 species. I might attribute this total to some very good birders and some birders who have very good ears. New birds discovered here were the Greater White-Fronted Goose, the Snow Goose, a flyover by a pair of Great Blue Herons, Acorn Woodpecker, Virginia Rail, Pacific-Slope Flycatcher, Chipping Sparrow, and our favorite, the House Sparrow.

The weather was just gorgeous, starting out cool and ending up on the warm side with not a cloud to be seen. It was a cheery crew of twenty that circled round Guajome. Kudos go out to Carol, who, showing up a wee bit late, walked the whole route twice looking for us. Fortunately, we needed a short break for doughnut holes, oranges, lemonade and coffee, thus allowing Carol the opportunity to finally find us. Our thanks to Jack, the scopemaster, who brought us in closer some of the more interesting birds for all to see. He failed to act upon his threat of looney a look.

My hope is for the Sapsuckers, who have been missing since 2014, to show up again for the count next year. Where are they, just Dixon Lake?

Flyin’ high ’til then,
Doug Walkley
