Please take a moment to ask the California Fish and Game Commission to adopt new regulations phasing out the use of lead in hunting ammunition, which will protect both birds and people from this dangerous toxin.

In response to overwhelming scientific evidence that lead left behind in the environment from spent ammunition was killing birds and putting people at risk, California in 2013 passed a law phasing out the use of lead in hunting ammunition by 2019. This law requires the California Fish and Game Commission to adopt regulations phasing out the use of lead, and that’s what the Commission is set to do this week.

The proposed regulations will start with requiring nonlead ammunition on more than 900,000 acres of state wildlife areas this year, then move to new requirements for upland game hunting next year, all in advance of a statewide requirement in 2019.

Audubon California believes that these regulations strike a proper balance between the conservation need to remove lead from the environment and accommodate those who need to adapt to the new law. Opponents of this common sense law continue to fight against any regulation of lead ammunition, so the Commission needs to hear your voice.
