Global Big Day—14 May 2016

14 May 2016. The second Global Big Day. We need your help to make it the biggest day of birding the world has ever seen. In 2015, more than 14,000 people in 135 countries entered almost 45,000 checklists, featuring 6,085 species of birds. All in a single day. In 2016, can we surpass those numbers? With your help, we can. Learn more.

eBird Photo of the Month

What’s this, an Ivory Gull on a trampoline!? It can’t be. The words “Ivory Gull” send many birders into a wistful state, wishing they they had more snowy white arctic gulls in their lives. Fortunately for some, this winter has featured multiple individuals in the upper Midwest US, including the above bird photographed here by Nick Anich. See the full checklist here.

New research takes world by storm

Hundreds of thousands of people have viewed this animated map resulting from the newest migration research that uses eBird data. Covering the entire Western Hemisphere, 118 species are shown going through their entire annual cycle—some migrating from the southern tip of Argentina and Chile to northern Canada. Your sightings make this possible. See the map here.
