Hello Bird Enthusiasts,
The Ramona Grasslands Preserve – Wildflower Loop on Highland Valley Road is a new bird walk location for the Palomar Audubon schedule. Our chapter hasn’t birded this area as a group for many, many, many years. Did I say, “many”? With additional time allowing, we also checked out Rangeland Road. There is another birding/hiking hotspot in the area called Ramona Grasslands Preserve – Old Survey Road 97. This location requires an easily acquired permit and was birded by a few PAS walk participants on the same morning. I’ve included this checklist below as well.
Most of us encountered thick fog on our drive up to the grasslands, but upon arrival, sunny skies appeared with crisp, cool temperatures and light winds. On the trail, we were initially met with many Lark Sparrows, Meadowlarks, and White-crowned Sparrows. The small pond to the west was dry, but we did pick up several more species in this area, including California Quail and Golden-crowned Sparrows. I think everyone enjoyed this track, which is a multi-use trail allowing for bicyclists and horses.
Rangeland Road was quite active with not only birds but also squirrels, coyotes, and the grazing/chillin’ cattle. Bird highlights were a Bald Eagle, a couple of Ferruginous Hawks, and a Peregrine Falcon. The large pond, visible to the west, was filled with water, and ducks and other waterfowl were actively dabbling and diving.
We identified 35 species at Wildflower Loop, 30 species at Rangeland Road, and 45 species at the Old Survey Road 97 location. Many thanks go out to Steve Ellis for leading the walk and sharing bird and trail expertise. Thank you to those with scopes who help with spotting and identification. Much appreciation goes out to the photographers who capture wildlife moments and memories, and much gratitude for everyone’s support and companionship.
Bird On!
Thank you.
