PAS Field Trip Report: Agua Dulce Trailhead

On Saturday, June 8th, 24 birders made the trek into the Laguna Mountains to enjoy a beautiful, cool morning looking for mountain specialties.  We were not disappointed.  The forest was alive with bird song which we often had to accept as the extent of bird documentation.  For example, we heard almost constant calling from Western Wood Pewees, but only briefly saw two of them on our 2.5-mile walk.  We also worked hard to see Warbling Vireos and a Cassin’s Vireo, whose songs made it seem like the birds were right in front of us, but only a few of us caught a glimpse.  I don’t think anyone left disappointed, though. It was a beautiful day, and we did get chances to see nesting nuthatches and bluebirds, Band Tailed Pigeons, bouncing chickadees, and a few lucky birders sighted a Hermit Warbler.  In all, we “saw” 35 different species.
