2025 Annual Picnic

Annual Picnic Brings Sunshine and Smiles

The Palomar Audubon Society’s annual picnic was held on Sunday, June 8 at scenic Adams Park in Valley Center, where rolling green lawns, shady picnic tables, and a bright blue sky created the perfect setting for a joyful gathering. Nearly 60 members attended the event, themed “Old-Fashioned Picnic in the Park,” and enjoyed a day filled with delicious food, friendly conversation, and nature-themed entertainment. Thanks to the hard work of the picnic committee—Penny Hernandez, Sunny Christiansen, Diane Walkley, Jack Peterson, Cindy Rippee, and Dianne Benham—every detail was thoughtfully planned and flawlessly executed, from the setup and food to the decorations and clean-up.

A highlight of the day was a visit from Critter Encounters, who introduced us to several remarkable animals including a Red-shouldered Hawk, Great-horned Owl, Barn Owl, and even a Fennec Fox! Members had the rare opportunity to observe the birds up close, touch the feathers which were passed around, and pet the gentle fox. Lunch featured classic picnic fare: fried chicken, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, and juicy watermelon, while a wide array of member-contributed desserts delighted the crowd. Diane Walkley’s beautifully crafted bird-themed gift baskets and succulent table centerpieces added extra charm—and lucky raffle winners took them home! As one member commented, “Whoever organized this sure knew what they were doing!” And we agree—the tireless efforts of Palomar Audubon’s favorite sisters, Penny and Sunny, truly made this a day to remember. It was a fun, festive afternoon full of laughter and the camaraderie that defines our wonderful society.
