On Saturday, July 12, thirteen birders met up at the Mile 19 Pullout in
the Laguna Mountains. This spot is a new location for us, and everybody
had a great time. The weather was quite warm, but we managed to minimize
the sun exposure by walking on the trail from “shade to shade”.
We found 33 different bird species. Lots of Acorn Woodpeckers, Mountain
Chickadees, American Coots, and Violet-green Swallows. The best birds of
the day were the surprising Scott’s Orioles, which we found at the “Water
of the Woods Pond”. This pond was our turnaround spot for the morning hike.
Many thanks go out to Steve Ellis for leading and keeping our eBird
checklist and also our wonderful photographers. See Steve’s checklist
