PAS Field Trip Report: William Heise County Park

On Saturday, July 5, 23 birders walked around Wm. Heise County Park, near
Julian, and we found 31 different bird species. Later, sixteen of our birders met up for lunch and some more birding at the Santa Ysabel Mission, where we found 15 different bird species.  The weather was warm for most of the day, and it was a great day for birding.

At Wm. Heise County Park, there were lots of Wild Turkeys, Acorn Woodpeckers, and Violet-green Swallows. I always enjoy seeing the beautiful Steller’s Jay at this location.

At the Santa Ysabel Mission, we found lots of Cliff Swallows and Brewer’s Blackbirds. Of course, the target birds at this location are the orioles. I think the best bird we found here was the Greater Roadrunner.

Many thanks go out to Cindy Fortner for keeping our eBird checklists: https://ebird.org/checklist/S257531071 and https://ebird.org/checklist/S257531059
And also, thanks go out to our wonderful photographers.

Thanks,
JIM BECKMAN,  trip leader
