It was a hot and steamy bird walk at Felicita County Park today. Twenty-one birders said, “Heat advisory? What heat advisory?”, and we persevered to find 34 species and two other taxa. Felicita Park is one of the oldest parks in the San Diego County park system and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We were grateful for the abundance of mature trees offering respite from the heat of the sun. Here we sit in the above photo cooling off under the shade of oak trees. The temperature was hovering around 83 F during our break, which happened to be just before 10 am. We managed to finish our walk before the thermometer hit 90 F.

Some of our avian highlights were a multitude of munias, an abundance of Acorn Woodpeckers (some flycatching and maybe a nestling), a bunch of bluebirds, numerous nuthatches including a probable family, fabulous Phainopeplas, rough-looking robins not sporting their best look due to molting, but we aren’t here to molt-shame any birds. Oh, and, two Wilson’s Warblers.
