PAS Field Trip Report: Kumeyaay Lake and Campground

On October 4, 2025, a beautiful California fall morning greeted 28 birders today at Kumeyaay Lake and Campground. This is an area within the 7000 plus acres of Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego. Temperatures were probably in the high 50s when we started our walk and ended in the low 70s.

We identified 46 species, a good number; although I felt the individual species numbers were relatively low with 163 birds counted. Ducks have been slow to show up this season. We had a whopping single Mallard, but the number of Common Gallinules was unexpected and exciting to see.

Overall, it was an enjoyable bird outing made possible by the weather, the terrain, our group’s focused birding interest, and the interactions within our birding group of friends and acquaintances.

Thank you all for your contributions and special thanks to Dave and Patrick who gave us scope support and those with cameras who document our beautiful sightings and enhance our experience.
