On Saturday, January 10, twelve birders walked around the Tijuana Estuary
in Imperial Beach. The weather was quite cold at the start of the hike,
but later it warmed up, and we all enjoyed a great morning of birding. We
birded the 2 main areas: the Visitor’s Center and the North McCoy Trail, and
later, the South McCoy Trail.
On the North McCoy Trail, we found 39 different bird species. Lots of
Red-winged Blackbirds, Song Sparrows, and White-crowned Sparrows. I
think the best bird we found here was a female Vermilion Flycatcher.
We then walked on the South McCoy Trail, and we found 48 different bird
species. Lots of Western Sandpipers, American Wigeon, and White-crowned
Sparrows. I think the best birds found here were the beautiful Western
Meadowlarks.
